Dr. Willis with plants.

In the quest for a healthier lifestyle, we often overlook the simplest additions to our environment that can have profound effects on our health and well-being. Indoor plants are one such addition, offering more than just aesthetic appeal. From purifying the air to reducing stress, the benefits of surrounding ourselves with greenery are numerous. Colorado Springs Direct Primary Care encourages patients and prospective patients to embrace the power of plants in their homes and offices. Dr. Willis recently had the opportunity to tour the amazing wholesale nursery, Dutch Heritage Gardens, and learn more about plants and their impact on our health and wellness. Dutch Heritage Gardens has an open house May 24th, 25th, 26th, 31st, June 1st, and June 2nd, 2024 at their location in Larkspur, CO - they will have wholesale pricing on gorgeous plants. This amazing, family owned local success story is a must visit this spring!

Why Environment Matters in Preventive Care

In the pursuit of better health, we often overlook the small, everyday factors that influence our well-being. One of the simplest — and most effective — additions to our environment is indoor plants.

At Colorado Springs Direct Primary Care, we encourage a patient-centered approach to preventive care, which includes lifestyle choices that support both physical and mental health. Indoor plants offer more than aesthetic appeal; they can positively impact stress levels, focus, and overall wellness.

The Health Benefits of Indoor Plants

Indoor Plants and Air Quality

Plants act as natural air filters, absorbing certain pollutants and improving indoor air quality. Common houseplants such as spider plants, snake plants, and peace lilies can contribute to a cleaner, healthier indoor environment.

While plants are not a replacement for proper ventilation, they can be a supportive part of a healthier home or workspace.

Boosting Mood and Reducing Stress

Spending time around plants has been shown to reduce stress and improve mood. Greenery can create a calming environment, helping to lower anxiety and support emotional well-being.

Plants like lavender and jasmine are often associated with relaxation, making them popular choices for homes and offices.

Improving Focus, Concentration, and Productivity

Indoor plants may also help enhance concentration and memory. Studies suggest that natural elements in work or study environments can improve attention and cognitive performance.

This makes plants a simple, supportive tool for creating a more focused and restorative space.

Supporting Healing and Recovery

Exposure to plants has been linked to improved recovery outcomes, including reduced blood pressure, lower stress levels, and improved comfort during healing. Even at home, plants can contribute to a sense of calm that supports recovery from daily stressors.

Supporting Local Businesses in Colorado Springs

Incorporating plants into your life is also an opportunity to support local businesses. Colorado Springs is home to many excellent nurseries and garden centers that provide high-quality indoor plants.

Dr. Willis recently toured Dutch Heritage Gardens, a family-owned wholesale nursery, and learned more about how plants contribute to health and wellness. Many local nurseries source their plants from Dutch Heritage Gardens, making it easy to shop locally and support the community.

A Small Gift to Support Your Well-Being

At Colorado Springs Direct Primary Care, our commitment to preventive care goes beyond traditional medicine. As a small gesture of support for your well-being, patients are welcome to ask Dr. Willis for a free plant clipping when scheduling or attending their next appointment.

It’s a simple way to encourage healthier, more restorative living spaces.

A Simple Step Toward Better Health

The benefits of indoor plants are clear — from supporting stress reduction to enhancing focus and overall well-being. As part of a holistic, patient-centered approach to health, consider adding greenery to your home or office.

Support local nurseries, create a healthier environment, and take small steps that contribute to long-term preventive care.

Do you know of any community gardens that offer the opportunity to grow vegetables?

What a great question. Yes, there are actually quite a few here locally. This site has a map with some: https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/1228805aa8f845129c4d4f1e33776775

This is another bigger space that is not on the map in the above link: https://bearcreekgardens.org/

Up north in Monument you can find the Monument Community Gardens on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MonumentCommunityGarden/

In Manitou Springs there is a place called the Butterfly Garden, they don't have community gardening, but they do have gardening classes and you can volunteer to support the very important pollinators: https://butterflies.org/

And depending on your level of interest, you could always reach out to local elementary schools and see if they need volunteers to help manage their learning gardens. This is one such program in D20: https://foothills.asd20.org/academics/learning-garden/
